Why is my well water red?

Red, orange, or rusty well water is almost always iron. The pump is still moving water. The water itself is carrying iron that turns red when it meets air.

Iron comes out of the well clear, then turns

A lot of wells in the valley and in the peninsula hills have iron in the groundwater. Down in the well it is dissolved, so a glass filled at the tap can look clear and then go yellow, then red, as it sits. Fixtures stain, white laundry goes peach, and ice maker lines collect a rust film.

That is a water-quality problem. Replacing the pump will not make the water clear. Iron filters and treatment are a different trade from pump repair, and we don’t pretend to be a treatment company.

When iron becomes a pump problem

Iron that falls out of the water as rust will pack a pressure tank, a check valve, and the small passages in an irrigation system. A pump that has been swallowing iron sediment can get noisy, lose performance, or lock up. If the water is red and the pump is also short-cycling, tripping, or pumping sand, those are two problems at once.

Iron bacteria is the messier cousin. The water may be slimy, the tank may have a reddish gel, and there is sometimes a swampy or oily smell. That film clogs emitters and check valves. Killing the bacteria is treatment work. Cleaning the pump equipment it has fouled is pump work.

What we can honestly do

We can repair or replace the pump, the tank, the check valve, and the controls if iron sediment has worn them out. We can also talk through a sand separator or a strainer where grit is getting into the irrigation. We will tell you plainly if the red color will still be there after the pump is fixed.

We don’t drill the well, shock the aquifer, or install a treatment plant. If you need the water clear for drinking or laundry, you’ll want a treatment company after the pump side is sound.

Short answers

Is red well water dangerous?

We aren’t a lab or a treatment company, so we won’t tell you it’s safe to drink. Iron staining is common and usually a nuisance, but any sudden change in color, smell, or taste is worth a water test.

Will a new pressure tank stop the red water?

No. A new tank can replace one that rust has destroyed. The iron is still in the water.

My irrigation is staining the sidewalk orange. Is that the pump?

The color is the iron. If heads are also clogging, look at the clogging article — a separator or a screen may help the equipment, not the color.
